Spearheaded by Sport Singapore, Team Nila is a national volunteerism movement that promotes the culture of giving, citizenship partnership and social cohesion through sport. New volunteers can watch this narrative video to understand the spirit of team Nila and the volunteering options available. Featuring dynamic camera work and rhythmic, hand–drawn textures, the animation beautifully conveys the movement's uplifting, inspiring energy.

Coming up with the visual and motion language

As the Lead Artist, I oversaw the project's completion and had the joy of art directing both the illustration style and motion language. Our aim was to develop a visual approach that captivates viewers and inspires enthusiasm in new volunteers watching the onboarding video. The client provided references emphasizing hand–drawn characters and tactile backgrounds with 2D scenes animated using a 3D parallax effect. Drawing from these examples, I crafted a visual and motion guide aligned with Team Nila's branding. All characters and environments are hand–drawn, featuring textures and brushstrokes that emphasize movement and direction, while dynamic camera pans, zooms, and transitions propel the narrative from scene to scene. With the style guide in place, I art–directed the team to maintain a cohesive visual language throughout. Our illustrator, Xiao Ming, created characters of diverse ages and ethnicities using angular shapes — perfectly embodying the energetic, inclusive spirit of Singapore's volunteer community.

Animation

Working off the limitation of painted assets, characters are rigged with puppet pins and animated with minimal movements that works to our favor. The slow motion scenes build a sense of awe — amplifying the emotion within the scene. And in trying to inject more movement to the scene, I decided to focus on the camera animation. The camera pans, rotate, and move like a handheld camera tracking the characters in the scene. I had fun animating the camera's rotation as compared to the usual positional keyframes that will come with the typical 2D style explainers.
